Biography
I am like you, and then again maybe not. I have struggled through most of my life until about the age 29. I will set 30 as the milestone for convenience. There was never an ah ha moment for me like so many other self made successful entrepreneurs, it was a long process and ended with this company and this blog at the age of 33. Why did it take so long. It was not until the age of 33, and actually 33 ½ (I am very technical and literal which annoys my wife to no end), that I made the commitment to what I am doing.
For anyone starting out I would say that the one big thing that you have to have is to be fully committed and willing to give massive and complete effort. When you are ready to do this you need to step up and list a few things, and this is what I did. It was such a tremendous help that there is no way that I can explain the change it made for me.
Before I get into it I will tell you that I am not religious, I am not new age, I have no idea how to meditate and get in touch with my inner self, but I do believe in a higher power, and a power of the brain that few know about. It is in trying to get in touch with this part that I have become who I am, and this was the definite beginning of the process.
Make 6 lists. I like to keep things in threes to make it easy, but 6 is a multiple of three so I guess it is ok, oh here I go again being all technical and mathematical. I also recommend that you do it with an old fashion pen or pencil on old fashion recycled paper. It gives it more of a personal feel, and you can go to the beach, to a hiking trail, the pool, where ever to really concentrate. I have found that when I get stuck if I just get out of where I am at I can suddenly think a lot better.
What I do/Have done: This is very important to see some of your skills, and know what you can do. After listing this then in a few short sentences describe who you are. Mine looks like this
What I do/Have done:
Resident Advisor, Campus tour leader, Phi Kappa Tau /founding father of Gamma Delta/secretary/treasurer, Physics club Vice-President, Peer leader, traveler, Satellite Communications, TEACHER, COACH.
I really feel that I am a Teacher and Coach first and foremost. I have always felt this way. I am a great teacher, and mostly a good coach. I will continue to focus my time in this way.
My Qualities: This is very important in making you feel better. We can all get some really good qualities out of ourselves with just a little thinking, and self reflecting. Really sit down on this one and be honest. Some surprising things may come out at you.
My Qualities:
Leadership, Peer Leader, Teacher, Entrepreneur, Creator, Technician, Athlete, Thinker, Competitor.
What I want to do: So just what is it that you are trying to accomplish. This is the big picture. Who do you want to be remembered as, what impact do you want to make, and so on.
What I want to do:
Stay at home dad, Entrepreneur, Leader of Creative Company, Free to do what I want, Traveler, Philosopher.
Notice how we are beginning to overlap. That is good we are getting to where we need to be.
My Interests: What are you interested in or passionate about. There really is no reason to start something that you are not really passionate about. That would be like creating your own job. For me I started working on my own because I just did not fit into what others wanted me to be. I am no crazy outsider, I just always want and I need, to do my own thing.
My Interests:
Sports – Football, Hockey, Golf, Odd Sports – Fitness, Diet, Teaching, Coaching, Traveling, Helping Others, Me, Personal Development, Technology, Environment, Boating, Water
Now you can see we are beginning to narrow our focus. There are some themes that occur over and over again.
What I need to Learn: This is kind of the next step thing. What do you feel like you still need to know to get to where you want to be? This is kind of hard when you are like me and always want to learn more.
What I Need to Learn:
Business, Personal Focus, Delivering My Message, Networking
What I need To Do: The final piece. Lets focus now and figure out just what it is that you need.
What I Need to Do:
Focus on the Big Picture, Focus on 1 Task at hand, Just Do It
And now the real fun begins, lets make something out of these statements and do some real good, some business, make some money, and most of all have fun.

I admire your accomplishments. I’m young and trying to head in your direction, starting with my debt-elimination blog (among other things!).
Best of luck for 2008!
