Setting Goals (Part Two)

Now that we know how to set goals, what goals do we set? As I said in my last post, I was not too good at it in the beginning; it does take some practice to get the whole goal setting stuff right. Don’t be afraid to practice it, to change your goals, and to adjust. It is all part of the process.

There are three basic goals that I think everyone should set.

  • Dreamer Goals – If you had your dream life, what would it be, how would you live, what charities would you give to, what kind of cars, boats, planes, houses, would you have? Dream the big dream, we will find out later that it can come true.
  • Long Term Goals – Set goals long term. For some people, like me, long term is 5 years, for others it is 20. Set your goals according what you feel like is a long time. Make these a little more realistic. Make these definite. You can still set a goal of $10,000,000 and you can achieve this, but set a date, 5-10-20 years from now, pick a date, any date, but make it definite. Do not say I am going to have this, or do this in 10 years. Say I am going to do this on or before March 8th 2012. Whatever it is, and whatever time frame you choose make it a definite thing, on a definite date. Post long terms goals somewhere that you can see them on a constant basis. Make sure that they are always visible. You need to be reminded of them constantly so that they don’t fade.
  • Short Term Goals – Now that you have your dream, and you have your long term goals set, it is time to get some short term goals. These are small victories along the way. They will also keep you on track to reach your ultimate or Dreamer Goals. These should also be definite with clearly set goals, and dates. These should be very reasonable something that you can see yourself doing already. But don’t make it too easy. You don’t want to lose interest because it is too easy. Make them just difficult enough so that it is a challenge. Short term goals change constantly. You need to check and adjust, check and adjust. Short term goals should always be in your thoughts.

Every year as a team we set goals. Usually we form a senior council of players and with the advisory of the coaches we sit down and figure out what we want to accomplish. We set three different types of goals.

The Dream Goal is always to win the State Championship. It is the ultimate goal, but there is only one team in each division that can be the State Champions.

Then we set some Long Term Goals. Usually they are along the lines of winning the Region, winning all our games, beating our rivals, something about team unity, or acting like a family.

Then we set our Short Term Goals. It is always the same, and it starts with one. Win our next game. You can’t win them all if you don’t win the first one.

Finally we always have goals for each different game. These are also short term goals and serve to keep us focused on the game and the task at hand.

Every good team sets goals; every successful person can tell you exactly what their goals are. If you want to be successful also you need to set goals.

Dreamer Goals
Long Term Goals
Short Term Goals
