I have wanted to be an entrepreneur for a long time, years. It was not until I read Rich Dad Poor Dad that I realized that there was something that I could do, not coming from a particularly financially sound family. So I set out to find a mentor. I still have not found one. But I was able to read some great books and found some good audio. My mentors have been the most influential and successful authors in the business and self development world. But nothing happened except gaining knowledge.
It was not until I started to set goals that things started happening for me.
My first goals were not very good, way too broad, way to difficult to measure. I was working toward something but not with a whole lot of effort or inspiration.
Then I set some goals that were specific, but maybe a little too large. I still have those goals and I am working toward them, but still not life changing. I hope to reach them someday.
So I got specific – see My Challenge – and the inspiration began. I became the real Coach Kip that I always wanted to be. I began inspired work. I could do things that I had not been inspired to do before. I could teach all morning, coach all afternoon, and then come home and work on getting my online businesses set up. There still was some struggle, but I was working hard.
Then my wife and I made a goal together – to live on a boat full time by next summer. Now not only am I inspired by My Challenge, I am excited to get the work done.
I finally know how to set goals. Here is how you can do them also
“Goals that are not written down are just dreams. Writing them down turns dreams into action, action produces inspiration. Inspiration and action are the creative process, and that is how you will achieve your goals”
Always write them down. Like the quote says, goals that are not written down are just dreams. Goals take action. Writing them down is the beginning of the action.
Set goals in the positive. Always in the positive. Never say I am not going to do something. Only say what you are going to do. Then you focus on what you want.
Set goals as if you already have done it. This may take a little explaining. Lets say the goal is I wish I had a Million Dollars. This sends the wrong message to you. Saying I wish is what the goal actually is. A year from now you will look at it and say “do I still wish I had a million dollars? “Yes I do”, so your goal is accomplished. You focus on the wish part. Ten years from now you still wish you had a million dollars, you still have accomplished your goal.
What if you say “I have a Million Dollars”. Then guess what if you look at it a year from now and you don’t have it you need to still work on it. Saying it in the now is much more compelling.
Post them where you can see them. To focus on it continuously you need to see it often. Putting it in a place that you can see everyday keeps that goal in the front of your mind. You must focus on it continuously and constantly. Put them on your bathroom mirror. Use a dry erase marker, or lipstick to write them. Put them on your rear view mirror or you steering wheel. Laminate them and put them in your pocket.
So as a recap:
- Write Them Down
- Write them In The Positive
- Write it as if You Have Already Done It
- Post Them where you can see them.
Part two will be about why type of goals to set, and what exactly my goals are.
Conceive It, Believe It, Achieve It
